Lindsay McDougall interview to SCENEzine 2016
Personal Life & Marriage
Recently got married in a unique way, blending traditional and fun elements. Played a guitar solo at his wedding ceremony. Life hasn't changed significantly after marriage apart from a short honeymoon in Cairns.
Recently underwent eye surgery for a detached retina, likely unrelated to typical causes like headbanging. Praised Australia’s Medicare system for covering his surgery cost, contrasting it with the expensive US healthcare system.
Vegan Lifestyle & Hangover Cure
Confirmed his wedding was entirely vegan. Suggested a vegan hangover cure: a greasy fry-up with hash browns, baked beans, mushrooms, and marinated tofu. Shared that after the wedding, the real hangover cure was their forgotten wedding cake and more beer.
Recommended vegan documentaries like Lucent (which he narrated) and Cowspiracy.
Band Updates & Touring
Preparing for an upcoming tour in December. Their new album is mostly written, but recording was delayed due to drummer Gordy’s arm injury. Excited about side projects, including playing with hip-hop artist Briggs.
Frenzal Rhomb's Songwriting Process
Band does not engage in "jam sessions"; they write separately. Jason and Lindsay record ideas individually before presenting them to the band. Most of their rehearsal time is spent socializing rather than practicing. Everyone in the band contributes to lyrics, with Gordy providing the most outlandish ideas.
Longevity of Frenzal Rhomb
Credits their longevity to never following music trends (e.g., avoiding ska and turntables). Their band has never been "in fashion," so they’ve never gone "out of fashion." Mentioned a failed attempt at incorporating rap into their music.
Soundwave 2016 & Festival Experience
Thrilled about playing at Soundwave, having attended as a fan before. Looking forward to having his own rider (instead of sneaking drinks). Excited to watch bands like NOFX, Northlane, Disturbed (his wife is a metalhead), Refused, and Soulfly.
Enjoys the energy of big festivals but finds them more stressful due to technical issues with his gear.
Tribute to Teenage Bottlerocket’s Brandon Carlisle
Reflected on their tour with Teenage Bottlerocket. Remembered Brandon Carlisle as a positive, energetic presence in the music scene. Expressed sadness over his passing, calling it an example of "bad things happening to good people."
Crowd Favorites & Stage Antics
"Punch in the Face" is still a fan favorite, but they no longer feel like fighting. Teased potential stage antics for Soundwave, possibly involving borrowed stage props from other bands.
